When I was 16, my friend’s mother sat me down one day and I will never forget what she said to me “Nicki, you need to always take care of yourself FIRST before anyone else in the family. If you are not healthy or happy, how can you expect to help others”.
When you are on an airplane, they say to put your oxygen mask on FIRST before trying to help your child. That child may not be able to help you if you are passed out.
These core principles also apply to running your business. How can YOU be at the top of your game when running your business?
A large percentage of the successful business people regularly workout in the mornings before they start their day and make it a high priority commitment in their daily routine. I actually have it scheduled into my calendar! After a heavy-duty workout, I feel refreshed and have more energy. We need to stay heart healthy and get it pumping!
I am not saying you need to go to the gym every day. Find an activity that you enjoy and allows you to escape while you exercise your body.
2. “Declutter the mind”
Did you ever notice that once you remove the cobwebs, things become clearer? It’s the same thing with the mind. Once you remove the negative influences, you become more creative in your solutions, more level headed in your decision making and more productive.
Another way to “declutter the mind” is to practice meditation. I am amazed at the number of high ranking male executives who admitted to meditating every day. I also try to schedule this into my calendar.
3. Positive fuel for the body
For your car, you can buy high performance fuels. It burns cleaner and is better for the engine. It’s the same thing with the food we eat. When I first started working out over 15 years ago and lost a lot of weight, I learned that there are some foods that are energy draining and some that fuel you. Observe and learn what makes you perform at your max!
Sleep is also another form of fuel for your body. Make sure you are getting enough.
4. Balance with family and friends
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. You cannot live in your business all the time. Remember what you are working so hard for. I know you need to make some sacrifices to achieve your business goals. Make sure your family knows the plans and how you are going to make it up to them. Family trips are nice and so is a family day every week. If you are having troubles fitting in time, try putting it into your calendar!
If you are at your peak with a strong mind and body, you have a better chance of achieving your business success. Your team, your vendors and most importantly, your customers will see the different! What are you doing to be at the Top of Your Game?
